TOWN HALL – JOBS FOR OAKLANDERS ON PUBLICLY FUNDED PROJECTS

Anyone can see that lots of construction and economic development projects
are happening in Oakland and new work is  beginning on the Army Base.
Yet in many cases, Oakland taxpayers – especially those who live in
the flatlands – are not hired for jobs on the projects their taxes are
subsidizing

Issues and solutions will be explored by the OaklandWORKS coalition at a Town
Hall Meeting held Thursday, Dec. 15 from 6 – 8 p.m.at the West Oakland
Senior Center, 1724 Adeline St. (at 18th and Adeline).

Member organizations in the coalition include the West Oakland
Environmental Indicators Project,  Oakland Black Caucus, John George
Democratic Club, Oakland Parents Together, PUEBLO, Black Women
Organized for Political Action (BWOPA), Oakland Natives Give Back, the
West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project and other groups and
individuals.

The 36th Annual Montclair Fine Arts Sidewalk Festival (also known as the Pacific Fine Arts Festival) celebrates art in the outdoors when more than 80 artists from the Bay Area and beyond will be displaying their wares against the scenic backdrop of Montclair and the Oakland Hills. Presented by the Montclair Village Association, with support from Oakland Tribune and The Montclarion, this free festival is set to take place Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. No streets are closed and there’s plenty of parking on the streets and in the Village Garage at the top of La Salle Ave.

The Montclair Fine Arts Festival features unique and one-of-a-kind art including paintings, sculpture , exquisite jewelry, breathtaking photography and much more. Among the artists presenting at this year’s show is Frederico Domondon of Union City who draws inspiration from Monet, Matisse and other impressionist painters. Frederico paints in acrylics on canvas using two distinctive styles: The first is the use of bold colors and spontaneous brushstrokes in painting cafes and other cityscapes and the second is Impressionism with a focus on peaceful landscapes, secluded gardens and villas defining tranquility and serenity.

Mendy Marks of San Francisco creates handmade jewelry, which is influenced by the many levels and colors in the landscape that surrounds us. Using anodized aluminum, sterling silver, gold, copper, and brass she layers shapes, colors and textures in her jewelry to create sensual, sculptural earrings, pins, and necklaces. Some elements are patinated, or heat-treated, to give them a more aged, natural look. She then accents the pieces with freshwater pearls and beads made of gemstones and minerals.

Shirley Robles of Danville has been making ceramic sculptures for more than 12 years. Though her favorite subject matter is frogs, she sculpts rabbits and sun faces as well as  fountains among other fun creatures for the home and outdoors . All of her pieces are fired at a high temperature and ideal for the garden. Among her most popular pieces are frog princes and princesses complete with 22-carat gold crowns.

Other artists participating in the Festival include Enrico Antiporda of Oakland who will be showcasing his vivid oil paintings; Robert Wunce of Santa Cruz featuring his silver jewelry; and Keith Liang of San Francisco with his landscape photography from around the world.

The Montclair Village Fine Arts Sidewalk Festival takes place in the Montclair business district on Mountain Avenue at LaSalle, off highway 13, between Park Boulevard and Thornhill Drive.
